Vacuum at Margaret Lawrence Gallery VCA

Janina Green, from the series Vacuum,1993 Type C photograph
Vacuum by Janina Green is a set of 14 vintage chromogenic prints made in 1993 and shown at the CCP in Melbourne and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. These images were made by superimposing photographed contemporary figures onto illustrations from ‘Home Beautiful’ magazines of the 50s, 60s and 70s. This process reflects the twin notion of the feminine as simultaneously pure yet intrinsically soiled and is at the heart of Janina Green’s densely collaged layered photographs with their richly retro modernist colour schemes of an idealistic era and the lone silhouetted almost boyish figure drawing us into the present.  Opened by: Naomi Cass, Director, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne.
